Etymology
From a contraction of Middle High German wīn (“wine”) + mānōt (“month”), referring to this as the month of harvesting grapes for wine. Cognate with German Weinmond, Weinmonat. Compare also French vendémiaire (the first month of the French Republican Calendar, starting in late September and ending in late October, literally “of the grape harvest”).
