Inherited from Middle French biere, borrowed from Middle Dutch bier, from Old Dutch *bier, from Proto-West Germanic *beuʀ (compare Old Saxon and Old High German bior), all from Proto-Germanic *beuzą. Akin to Old English bēor (“beer”). More at beer.
