Etymology
Inherited from Sanskrit भिनत्ति (bhinatti, “to break”) with generalisation of the weak stem. The passive is a continuation of the Sanskrit passive, Sanskrit भिद्यते (bhidyate) with the usual change of voice from middle to mostly active.
