beuk

Dutch

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /bøːk/
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: beuk
  • Rhymes: -øːk

Etymology 1

From eastern Middle Dutch boke, boeke, from Old Dutch *buoka, from Proto-West Germanic *bōkijā. Western varieties of Dutch, including generally Standard Dutch, do not have umlaut of long vowels. The eastern variety with umlaut was probably adopted to avoid homonymy with boek.
