From Old Swedish berætta, from Middle Low German berichten, in correspondance to Swedish rätta (verb) and rätt (verb and noun), equivalent to be- + rätt + -a or be- + rätta. Cognate with Danish berette, Norwegian Bokmål berette, Dutch berichten (“to report”), berechten (“to judge, to try”), bericht (“a report”), Afrikaans berig (“to report, a report”), German berichten (“to report”), Bericht (“a report”) and Luxembourgish beriichten.
