Low German
Etymology
From earlier barsten, from Middle Low German bersten, from Old Saxon brestan, from Proto-Germanic *brestaną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰres- (“to burst, break, crack, split, separate”). Compare Dutch barsten, German barsten, English burst, Swedish brista. The development of basten from barsten closely mirrors the development of the English verb bust from the equivalent English cognate, burst.
Verb
basten (third-person singular simple present bast, past tense bost or bast, past participle bosten or bast, auxiliary verb wesen)
