bạch tuộc

Vietnamese

Etymology

Probably a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 八足 (eight feet, SV: bát túc) or non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 百足 (one hundred feet, SV: bách túc). The first is more biologically likely but the second is more phonologically sound.
