Inherited from Sanskrit बालक (bālaka) (with Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-)[1][2]). Cognate with Maharastri Prakrit 𑀩𑀸𑀮𑀅 (bālaa), Paisaci Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀴𑀓 (pāḷaka).
