bërrakë

Albanian

Etymology

A formation from birë, with similar -r- > -rr- change as in bërryl.[1] Related to Greek βράγος (vrágos, shallows). Jokl argues for a substrate origin, identifying the word with the ancient Balkan stem bar- in river names. [2]

Noun

bërrakë f (plural bërraka, definite bërraka, definite plural bërrakat)

  1. muddy pool, pond, swamp
