Borrowed from Balinese ᬅᬯᬢᬵᬭ (awatara), derived from Sanskrit अवतार (avatāra, “descent of a deity from a heaven”), a compound of अव (ava, “off, away, down”) and the vṛddhi-stem of the root √तॄ (√tṝ, “to cross”). Doublet of avatar.
