From Proto-Balto-Slavic *awiś- ~ *awiź-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew-iǵʰ(s)-eh₂, or of non-Indo-European substrate origin.
Cognate with Lithuanian aviža (“oat”), Old Prussian wyse (“oats”), Proto-Slavic *ovьsъ (“oats”), Latin avena.
