Borrowed from French automatique + -ny, from Ancient Greek αὐτόματον (autómaton), neuter of αὐτόματος (autómatos, self-moving, moving of oneself, self-acting, spontaneous), from αὐτός (autós, self, myself) + μέμαα (mémaa, to wish eagerly, strive, yearn, desire).
