From a- + rosta (bundle of twigs used as a fan, e.g. for driving away flies) + -are.

arrostàre (first-person singular present arròsto, first-person singular past historic arrostài, past participle arrostàto, auxiliary avére) (archaic, transitive)

  1. to shake (a whip, one's tail, etc.) as if waving a rosta
  2. to drive away (mosquitoes, flies, etc.) with a rosta, or with the hands
