Etymology

Fortescue proposes derivation from Proto-Eskimo *aʁvaɣ (“edge of the hand”), referring to something which comes after reaching the fifth finger. Alternatively, Dorais and Starostin both propose derivation from Proto-Inuit *aʁvi-, from Proto-Eskimo *aʁvi-, both meaning "cross over", referring to crossing over to the next hand after reaching the fifth digit.
