Etymology

Unknown. Possibly borrowed from Sanskrit ईर्ष्यति (īrṣyati, to envy) or a related term within the Indo-Iranian family, or from Proto-Indo-European *ers- (to move); alternatively from Proto-Turkic *arsïlan (lion), whence also Turkish aslan (lion). Compare Tocharian A ārṣal.
