From Middle Breton autrou, from Old Breton altro, from Proto-Brythonic *alltrọw, from Proto-Celtic *altrawū (foster-uncle), from *aleti (to nourish). Cognate with Welsh alltraw (godfather) and Welsh athro (teacher).
