From the Medieval form antepõer, from Latin antepōnere, present active infinitive of antepōnō. Cognate with Portuguese antepor.

antepoñer (first-person singular present antepoño, first-person singular preterite antepuxen, past participle anteposto)

1. (transitive) to put or place in front
   • 1318, A. López Ferreiro, editor, Galicia Histórica. Colección diplomática, Santiago: Tipografía Galaica, page 147:

     Et o dito fernan garcia anteposeo con seus omes et con suas armas et leuouho consigo para a dita rrocha

     And said Fernán Garcia put him in front, with his men and weapons, and took him into said fortress

2. (takes a reflexive pronoun) to put oneself ahead, to take the lead
3. (figurative, transitive) to fire

While antepoñer is the more widespread form of this verb, some Galician-speaking regions favor the form antepor and a correspondingly different conjugation.
