1. (transitive) take the place of, be a substitute for, replace, supplant, stand in for

   Ĉu vi povos anstataŭi min dum mia foresto?

   Will you be able to take my place while I’m away?

   En ĉi tiu plado mielo anstataŭas sukeron.

   In this dish honey replaces sugar.

Not to be confused with anstataŭigi “replace, put something or someone in the place of another.” Compare:

• Mielo anstataŭas sukeron “Honey is a substitute for sugar.”
• Mi anstataŭigas sukeron per mielo “I replace sugar with honey.”
