Inherited from Old Spanish angoxa, itself borrowed from Old Catalan angoxa, from Latin angustiae (tribulations, difficulties). (/ʃ/ > /x/ is not a native outcome of /-stj-/ in Spanish.) Doublet of angustia. Compare modern Catalan angoixa.
