From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ampun (“pardon, forgiveness”) (Compare Sundanese ampun (“pardon, forgiveness”), Old Javanese ampun (“show mercy toward, receive with favor”)).[1]
The claim that this term derives from Arabic عَفْوٌ (ʕafwun) is false based on the form found in Old Javanese.
