Etymology

From an unattested Vulgar Latin *amārelli, from amārus (bitter) + -ellus (suffix added to an adjective forming a diminutive of that adjective). Possibly by contamination of Ancient Greek μαρούλιον (maroúlion, a kind of lettuce), which is derived itself from an earlier *ἀμαρούλιον (*amaroúlion), from Latin amārus (“bitter”).
