Etymology
From an unattested Vulgar Latin *amārelli, from amārus (“bitter”) + -ellus (“suffix added to an adjective forming a diminutive of that adjective”). Possibly by contamination of Ancient Greek μαρούλιον (maroúlion, a kind of lettuce), which is derived itself from an earlier *ἀμαρούλιον (*amaroúlion), from Latin amārus (“bitter”).
