Etymology
A merger of two words: 1. older algemen, from al (“all”) + gemen (“common”), a calque of German allgemein; 2. Swedish allmän, from Old Norse almennr, from Proto-Germanic *alamannijaz. Derived from *alamann- (“mankind”), which is itself a compound of *ala- (“all”) + *mann- (“man”).
