Inherited from Vulgar Latin alvea or albea, from Latin alveus (“channel or bed of a river”). Alternatively, formed as a new singular from the plural of an original Romanian masculine form *albiu.[1] Compare Lombard albio, Venetian albio, albi, Tarantino albi, Piedmontese arbi, French auge.
