Found in almost every Yoruba dialect and Proto-Edekiri descended language. The second part of the term likely comes from tɔ̃ (to be new). Compare with Yoruba ọbuntun, ọbitọn, ọbụntụn, obutọn. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *ɔ-bʊtʊ̃, *ɔ-bɪtʊ̃
