Etymology

First attested as sudrekercha in 1094. Compound of zuid (south-), the toponym Schoorl and Old Dutch walt (marsh forest, swamp forest). The settlement was initially called Sudrekercha, a compound of sūthar (southern, south-) and kirika (church). The element zuid was added to distinguish the settlement from Noord-Scharwoude.
