Wittewierum
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as werum in the 13th century. Compound of wit (“white”) and the dative plural form of Old Frisian wier (“artifical mound for habitation”). The element wit was added to distinguish the settlement from two other villages called Wierum; the element refers to a nearby Norbertine monastery, the monks of which wore white habits. Compare Grijssloot, Schiermonnikoog and Wittevrouwen.
