Etymology

Playful extension from Southern blot analysis, which is eponymous, named after Edwin M. Southern. When other similar techniques were developed soon afterward, they were named Western and Northern in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. The origin from the surname Southern means that all the terms are often capitalised.

Noun

Western blot analysis (countable and uncountable, plural Western blot analyses)

  1. (molecular biology) A laboratory technique, akin to Southern blot analysis, used to identify antibodies and other proteins.
