Etymology
- (Friesland) First attested as ghaest around 1333. Calque of West Frisian Westergeast, derived in turn from a compound of wester (“western, west-”) and Old Frisian gast (“elevated sandy land”). The element wester was added to distinguish the settlement from Wijgeest.
- (Noord-Holland) First attested as Westegeest in 1562. Compound of wester (“western”) and geest (“elevated sandy land”). Named after a polder.
