Wercheren

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as Werghen in 1866. Etymology uncertain. The toponym is hard to interpret due to a paucity of old attestations. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch *warg (willow, Salix) and heri (sandy ridge). Perhaps related to dialectal werkhout (willow wood). Compare Werchter.
