First attested as wagenberghe in 1331. Compound of an uncertain first element and berg (“hill, elevated place”). The first element has been interpreted as Old Dutch Wago (“a personal name”) and Proto-Germanic *waegja- (“sloping”). Compare Wagenborgen.
