1. An independent city, the administrative seat of Lower Franconia, Bavaria, Germany.
2. A rural district of Lower Franconia, Bavaria, surrounding but not including the town of Würzburg, which nevertheless serves as its administrative seat.

First attested as Virteburch (704) and Uburzis. The second element corresponds to Burg, but the first element is said to be Celtic. The Medieval Latin form was Herbipolis.[1][2] Folk etymology later connected it to Würze (“spice, aroma”).
