Etymology

Vortum is first attested as Vortum in 1526. Mullem is first attested as molna in 1152. The etymology of Vortum is uncertain: the toponym is potentially a compound of voorde (“ford, crossing”) and heem (“home, settlement”). Mullem is derived from Old Dutch molne (“mill”), later reinterpreted as a compound of molen (“mill”) and heem (“home, settlement”). Formerly two indepedent hamlets.
