Etymology

Compound of vinter (“winter”) +‎ gata (“street”) +‎ -n (“the”). Origin unknown. Possibly from that weather predictors tried to foretell the winter based on its shape. Attested since 1579. Cognate with Icelandic vetrarbraut.
