First attested as dioli in 850-865. Etymology uncertain. Possibilities include a derivation from Middle Dutch tuyl (“agricultural land”) or from a term related to Middle Low German tûl (“copse”). Compare Thull, Tilburg, Tuil and Tull en 't Waal.
