From Proto-Norse ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᚹᚨᚱᛁᛃᚨᛉ (stainawarijaʀ), consisting of ᛊᛏᚨᛁᚾᚨᛉ (stainaʀ, “stone”) and Proto-Norse *ᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*warjaʀ, “defender”). In some cases, the second part of Steinarr might stem from *ᚺᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*harjaʀ, “warrior”), being equivalent to Old High German Steinheri.
