First attested with certainty as de sprundele in 1282. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymology include a compound of Old Dutch *sprund (lively, vibrant) and lo (light forest) or a derivation from a term cognate to Old English sprindil (glue used to trap birds, bird trap).
