First attested as Spinolaberg in 1869. Derived from Spanish Spinola (“a surname”) and berg (“hill, elevated place”). Named after Ambrogio Spinola (1569-1630), a military commander employed by the Spanish Empire who led a failed attack on Bergen op Zoom in 1622.
