Etymology

Potentially attested as Mons Petri in the first half of the ninth century, attested with certainty as berg in 858. Derived from the name of Saint Odile of Alsace and berg (“hill, elevated place”). The settlement had various names before receiving its current name in the fifteenth century, perhaps due to the influence of a local monastery.
