Etymology

First attested as sint annenlant in 1493. Compound of the name of Saint Anne and land (“land”). The name was given as a reference to the namesake of Anne of Burgundy (ca. 1435-1508), who initiated the land-reclamation project which resulted in the creation of the polders which the settlement was later built on. Compare Sint Anna and Sint Annaparochie.
