From being a pair of galaxies that are similar in appearance and appearing conjoined, analogous to a pair of Siamese twins.
Usage notes
NASA has deprecated the name "Siamese Twins" within NASA, due to perceived racist naming in the term "Siamese twins", which is considered to inordinately associate this birth defect with Thailand (“Siam”) and Thai (“Siamese”) people.
