(engineering, Judaism) An elevator/lift (device for transport within a building) which operates automatically on Shabbat, generally by stopping and opening its doors at each floor of the building, allowing observant Jews to make use of the elevator without violating Jewish prohibitions against operating electrical machinery on Shabbat.
