Sgitheanach

Scottish Gaelic

Etymology

Unknown. First attested as Latin Scitis, Scetis, probably from a pre-Indo-European substrate language. Suggestions connecting it with sgiath (wing) or Old Norse ský (cloud) are almost certainly folk etymology. See Etymology of Skye for more.
