Etymology
Hispanicized form of Kapampangan sasmuan (“meeting place”). Spanish ⟨x⟩, then pronounced /ʃ/ in Early Modern Spanish period, became pronounced /ks/ due to spelling pronunciation. The ⟨a⟩ transformed to ⟨e⟩ due to the Kapampangan schwa /ə/ sound.
