Schneewittchen
German
Alternative forms
- Sneewittchen (obsolete)
Etymology
Partial calque of German Low German Sneewittken (from Snee (“snow”) + witt (“white”) + -ken). The Brothers Grimm only adapted the diminutive suffix to -chen, thus entitling the tale Sneewittchen. Over time the first word also came to be adapted to Schnee. Full calquing to Schneeweißchen, however, was hindered by the fact that it already occurred in an unrelated tale called Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot.
