First attested as Borculo (Schependom-van-) in 1840. Derived from Middle Dutch schependoem (“area under the jurisdiction of a specific schepenbank”). The toponym refers to all lands extra muros that were under the jurisdiction of Borculo. Compare Ooyse Schependom.
