Potentially attested as senieda in the 13th century, attested with certainty as schemede in 1391. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations include a compound of Old Saxon schem (plank bridge) or Old Frisian *scald (wetland, shallows) and made (pasture) or a derivation from Old Saxon schem suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi.
