Etymology

First attested as uuestsagnem in 918-948. From Middle Dutch Sassenem, from Old Dutch Saxnem. Equivalent to Saso (“a given name”) +‎ -en- +‎ heim (“home”). The first element is unlikely to refer to the Saxon peoples. Compare Saaksum, Lutke Saaxum and Saaxumhuizen.
