Roskilde

English

Proper noun

Roskilde

  1. A city and municipality in central Zealand, Denmark; former capital of Denmark.

Danish

Etymology

Equivalent to Ro (male name) + -s- + kilde (spring). From Old Danish Róiskelda, from Old Norse Hróiskelda, from Hrói (male name) + kelda (spring).[1] Compare Medieval Latin Roskildia (attested c. 1200 in Gesta Danorum) and the Old Icelandic Hróarskelda (in which Hrói has been interpreted as the more common name Hróarr[1]).

The name is traditionally associated with the semi-legendary King Roar, but Roar (Hróarr) is not the same name as Ro (Hrói).[2]
