Blench explains that a fricatization of the proposed Proto-Niger-Congo *-tuk root, likely caused the /t/ to shift to an /s/. This can be seen in potential cognates Akunnu ansò, Ekiromi asùk, Proto-Akpes *à-sùgù, Akan aso, (see Proto-Kwa *-tʊ̃), Ukaan usùk, Savannas languages (Baatonum soo, Besme tɔ̃ː (“to hear”), Proto-Bua *to(l)).
