Etymology

Proposed to be derived from Proto-Edekiri *ɛ̀-ɣɔ̀rɪ̀ɣɔ̀, ultimately from *ɛ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) +‎ *ɣɪ̀ɣɔ̀ (“partial reduplication of *ɣɔ̀ "to spray, to smoke"”). Retained only in Olukumi and Ekiti dialects, while other Proto-Yoruba descendants inherited *è-fífí
